About us

Climate Standard is an Italian innovative start-up founded by a paleoclimatologist specialising in decarbonisation, a computer scientist specialising in AI and an engineer specialising in innovation and forecasting.

We write the rules for measuring carbon credits from farmland and forests, we choose who audits the projects and we keep the public registry, where every credit has its own code.

We want anyone who farms land or manages a forest in Italy to be able to sell their credits across Europe, under public rules and independent audits.

Climate Standard is among the first certification schemes to have started the assessment with EA, the European co-operation for Accreditation.

What we do and what we do not do

We do
  1. We write the methodologies for farmland, based on the EU CRCF rules, and for forests, with the PEFC programme.
  2. We run the portal where those who generate credits upload their documents and the certification body consults them.
  3. We keep the public registry: a credit enters it only after the certification body has issued the certificate.
  4. We keep the methodologies up to date and maintain relations with DG Climate Action and the European Commission.

We do not
  1. We do not develop projects.
  2. We do not carry out field audits: audits are carried out by the certification body, which issues the certificate.
  3. We take no commission on credit sales. Credits are sold by those who generate them, directly to companies or through brokers: we can help you find them.

How we keep auditing separate

The auditor is not paid by those who generate the credits

As a rule, Climate Standard chooses and pays the certification body. Land managers do not choose who audits them, and buyers know the audit is independent.

Who oversees the certification scheme

A supervisory committee, made up of people independent of Climate Standard's management, oversees the scheme and decides autonomously.
